Wonder Girls let down by poor sound in Singapore
Talk about fan fervour. It took over an hour for the Wonder Girls to appear, but that didn't dampen the spirit of the 1,000 or so fans waiting to catch a live showcase of their favourite Korean pop idols at the Marina Bay Sands convention centre last Friday night.
The five lovely lasses - digital ambassadors for Sony Ericsson - had spent two days giving interviews and appearing at autograph sessions. But buoyed by vociferous fans who whooped, cheered and chanted their support, the girls were determined to give their all.
While the performance itself was commendable, it was unfortunate that the girls were let down by the sound mix, which submerged their vocals at times. It made for an uneven night, but troupers that they are, the Wonder Girls didn't let that mar their show.
The girls kicked off with their latest hit "Two Different Tears", then went into a remix version of the Pussycat Dolls' "Don't Cha" - an unusual choice, but their sensual choreography was a welcome distraction during that song and on So Hot.
Of course, there was only one moment everyone was waiting for. After a quick costume change into the familiar shimmery mini dresses, the Wonder Girls launched into their mega hit, "Nobody", before ending the night with "Tell Me".
Despite the technical glitches, fans enjoyed the short set. "It was great to finally see them performing onstage," said accounts executive Teo, 25.
They didn't even seem to mind that the pre-show activities hosted by Jamie Yeo took too long to begin and even longer to end. They needn't have bothered. As far as the fans were concerned, it was nobody, nobody but the Wonder Girls.
